Oral health is an important part of our overall health and we have come a very long way in the past few generations in making progress in this area. Just think, it used to be a common wedding gift to pay for the bride to have all her teeth pulled out and replaced with a full set of dentures…

That seemed normal at the time because no one knew how to stop natural teeth from going bad and falling out. We now know the answer is relatively straightforward:

• Practice good oral hygiene including flossing daily
• Have a dental check-up once or twice a year
• See a hygienist twice a year

At Starlite Dental Care our focus is helping you avoid pain and expense in the future though these three simple and cheap methods. Over the past three decades Dr Dhutia has seen the rate of tooth loss among her long term patients all but disappear, and that is no accident – it’s down to good oral hygiene and regular check-ups that flag up potential problems before they cause permanent damage.

We want all our patients to avoid the need for serious dental work, but new patients coming to us often have problems that have become serious because they have avoided check-ups. In fact, this is a common problem across the UK, where:

• 27% of adults only visit their dentist when they have a problem.
• Almost half the adult population of England (48%) and a third (31%) of children have not seen a dentist within two years.
• One in seven children have not seen a dentist by the age of eight.
• Children aged under 10 in England are still more likely to be treated in hospital for rotten teeth than for any other medical reason.
• Only 21% of adults use dental floss regularly and one in three have never flossed their teeth.
